In 2020, I got back into game development. From the early to mid 2010's I think I really did fancy myself a game developer. But that stopped once I became focused on working on the "pREServed edition" of ESKIMO: The Video Game. I would throw all my energy into this single game, get nowhere and then discard everything and start over in a new engine. Everything had to be perfect and built from the ground up.
Thankfully this cycle eventually broke when I put out *** Racer and I realized once more that making games is super fun and exciting! The rest of 2020 had me refining game engines in the effort to make smaller more achievable games than the grander scope of "build ESKIMO from scratch" that I had originally been stuck on. So far, none of those games have been finished.
What has been finished so far is a weird little visual novel I made called Extreme Tax Masters, which was developed to be played on Nicole He's "EXTREME" themed Twitch stream. I thought it'd be fun to participate in making a game for the stream since I had this new functioning "Adagio2" engine I made and I really wanted to participate in something like a Game Jam to put it to the test and to serve as a break from the bigger project I was working on.
From an engineering perspective, it's kind of duct taped together. The Visual Novel system I'm using for this game is a modified version of a more Point and Click focused VN engine for another project, where you move from room to room and click on hotspots to interact with them. Since this is a much more vanilla visual novel but I didn't have time to make the systems for more traditional visual novels, the game uses this Point and Click room system behind the scenes. The game actually moves between several identical looking rooms to set up the scene and background music. It's definitely not ideal, but it was what I had working at the time!

Do you have what it takes to become the ultimate tax master? This is a silly visual novel game I made for Nicole He's EXTREME Stream from March 2021. While the theme I was supposed to go for was "EXTREME" I thought it'd be funny to make a game that juxtaposed the incredibly mundane with an extreme aesthetic (specifically: explosions). This is what I ultimately made.
