At the start of 2025, I applied to Indie Game Academy's Level 3 cohort program. I crave working on more collaborative art, but up until this point my most collaborative game project was probably *** Racer, unless you count the ancient games I helped make with my sister many lifetimes ago. My whole quest to work professionally in the games industry is in part a roundabout way to work on more collaborative projects. So when I found this cohort program, I signed up without hesitation. The idea of working on a months-long project with a team of people who are all dedicated is so exciting! Plus I'd have new games on my portfolio to help with making a jump into the games industry.

Team Vanguard was assembled in March of 2025, but before we began work on a longer project, we needed to get a feel for how we work together as a team. As part of the program, we made Kaiju Requiem during a week-ish long game jam during GDC weekend.

The theme of the jam was to make a Galaga Clone. We decided to take this opportunity to try working in Godot as our engine of choice, diverting from other teams who were able to use a pre-made starter project in Unity. I'm pretty proud of what we accomplished in that week considering most of us had finished (or even started) a project in Godot before. And half the team was attending GDC while most of this jam was going on.

I'm proud of what we worked on and I'm excited to see where we go from here!

...Oh, and about that whole plan to have new portfolio projects to get into the industry... during the development of this game I ended up getting offered a game dev job without any need for these extra projects on my portfolio. Funny how that worked out.

Game Description:

The CORE mechs defeated the Kaiju hordes a long time ago.

Or so the world was told.

Years later, a young pilot with dreams of being a hero, takes her scavenged mech out for a test run on the outskirts of the city. Flying above the Outer Districts she discovers a rampaging army of monsters fueled by rage and revenge.

How did they get here? Why did the CORE lie?

There's no time to contemplate what it all means. The only way to stop the destruction of her already struggling city is to face the hordes full on and push her scavenged, CORE tech to its limits.

She revs up her engines and says an old prayer, thinking of her old heroes and how she's about to become one herself:

Let the Great Cities Stand Forever. Long Live Humanity
